Mystery neighbor in north Lincoln praised for putting out flames
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN)- A home near North 48th and Fremont caught fire Thursday morning but quick action from an unidentified man saved the home from destruction.
Lincoln Fire & Rescue arrived at the scene around 7 a.m. with the flames nearly extinguished thanks to the neighbor.
Homeowner Joyce Meuratella told Channel 8 she was grateful for the neighbor who grabbed a nearby water hose and doused the blaze.
“I tried to get 911 but I was too nervous,” she said. “I dropped my phone and a neighbor guy came out the way somewhere and put the fire out.”
LFR Fire Investigator Damon Robbins confirmed the cause of the blaze was improperly disposed cigarettes causing $2,500 in damages to the home.
Robbins said improperly disposed cigarettes are one of the top three causes of home fires in Lincoln.
“You know cooking fires are number one every year and then electrical and cigarettes are the top three causes of accidental fires every year,” he said.
Three people were in the home at the time of the fire, but none were injured as a result of the flames.
