Nebraska hospitals have $15 billion impact on economy, report shows

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – In recognition of National Hospital Week, the Nebraska Hospital Association released its Community Benefits Report on Thursday.

The report shows the economic and community benefits that hospitals provide to their communities.

Some of these benefits includes picking up the tab for Medicare and Medicaid patients and providing charity care.

They also put money toward research projects and education for health care students.

Health officials from across the state spoke about why it’s important for hospitals to provide for their communities.

“As an economic driver in our state, our state, thank goodness, is full of nonprofit hospitals and health care systems, and we really do invest into communities,” said Ivan Mitchell, CEO of Great Plains Health in North Platte.  “We don’t control or limit the amount of Medicaid or self-paid patients that we would see.”

By providing thousands of jobs across the state, hospitals have around a $15 billion impact on the economy, according to Jeremy Nordquist, president of the Nebraska Hospital Association.
