Three inmates at the Nebraska State Penitentiary have tested negative for COVID-19, corrections officials said Monday.

Lab results were received Monday for the three men, who were the first incarcerated individuals in the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) to be tested for the virus.

Corrections officials said the tests were done as a precaution, because the men had been in close contact with a staff member who tested positive. The inmates have been in quarantine.

To date, eight employees with NDCS have tested positive for COVID-19. Officials have not said whether any other inmates have been tested.
