LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Nebraska State Patrol will be on the lookout this Halloween to monitor the roads for impaired drivers.

Officials say as kids go out to trick-or-treat it’s important for drivers to stay alert for kids and keep their focus on the road.  If alcohol is involved, plan to have a sober driver for the trip home.

Troopers will be performing high-visibility patrols to reduce the chance of severe car crashes.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 56 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes on Halloween night, including 11 pedestrians in 2020.

Safety Tips for Drivers

  • Be alert for trick-or-treaters by scanning the road, especially where sight distance is
  • Slower speeds save lives.
  • Put your phone down and keep your attention on the road.
  • If you see an impaired driver, call *55 to make a report to the NSP Highway Helpline.

Safety Tips for Pedestrians

  • Be visible. Even if your costume is dark, it’s a good idea to have a light with you.
  • Walk on the sidewalk and use crosswalks or intersections to cross the street.
  • Double-check for cars before crossing the street. Just because you see the car, doesn’t
mean the driver can see you.
  • Use the buddy system to help keep each other safe.

NSP troopers are able to work overtime and increase patrols this Halloween thanks to a grant for $7,375 from the Nebraska Department of Transportation, Highway Safety Office.
