Nebraska storms are reminder to make sure you have insurance coverage you need
SEWARD, Neb. (KLKN) – It’s been more than six months since large hail brought widespread damage to Seward, but some homeowners are still waiting on repairs.
That’s why it’s important to have clear communication with your insurance agent about your exact needs.
Mandy Cutshall and her husband are just one of several families struggling with their insurance company to get repairs done.
“I just want to be taken care of; I want to be in good hands,” Cutshall said. “I feel like we’ve done everything we’re supposed to.”
Two contractors have told Cutshall the roof is totaled and should be fully repaired.
“For the house and the garage, they are being quoted at $26,103.09, and we’re being given less than $5,000,” Cutshall said. “I can’t contract to get the roof done when I don’t have the money to get it fixed.”
Independent insurance agent Brent Mansheim says many insurers may not replace property if only parts of it were damaged.
“Some policies, most policies probably, would only pay for the damaged area, so if the south half of the roof was OK, it may only pay for that one half,” Mansheim said.
Another independent agent, Mitchell Lichti, says that “if the hail, wind, fire damage or loss situation is extensive enough, the company should have no choice but to replace everything.”
Lichti also made it clear that replacement also depends on individual policies, state jurisdictions and legislation.
In Cutshall’s case, she said the $5,000 still wouldn’t be enough to fix the roofing and everything else that was damaged, such as siding, window wraps and gutters.
“I feel like they are passing the buck and juggling me in the air until I get fed up and walk away,” Cutshall said. “I’m not going to do that.”
If you’re unsure of what your home insurance policy covers, or have any questions about your plan, Mansheim says it’s important to talk to your agent.
