LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services is making a large investment in the state’s child care employees in hopes of stabilizing and expanding the workforce.

The Division of Children and Family Services is investing $66 million to recognize and reward child care workers, repay student loan debt, and expand access to quality child care.

Labor shortages have caused serious challenges in the child care sector.  The department aims to relieve some of the strain through the Workforce Stipend and Loan Repayment funds.

These incentives target both child care providers and their employees.

Applications will begin being accepted in December.

“The lack of quality childcare options nationwide has been a continuing barrier forcing families to make difficult decisions such as leaving the workforce,” Stephanie Beasley, director of the Division of Children and Family Services, said in a press release. “This investment into Nebraska’s critical workforce will help boost childcare options for working families and support professionals doing this important work.”

The department will hold several virtual information sessions next week in English and Spanish to discuss eligibility and how to apply.

Virtual Informational Sessions:

  • Nov. 14, 6 p.m., Online Q&A session in English
  • Nov. 15, 6 p.m., Online Q&A session in Spanish
  • Nov. 15, 7 p.m., Online Q&A session in English
