New charges filed for Grand Island men involved in assault and manslaughter

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KLKN) — The July 5 assault that resulted in the death of Matthew Bishop, 41, left two Grand Island men in custody. Today, the charges for Jesus Reyes and Angel Vega were amended.
Jesus Reyes, 23, is now charged with manslaughter along with the previously filed first-degree assault.
Angel Vega is now charged with manslaughter and accessory to a felony along with the previously filed first-degree assault.
The evidence supporting the amended charges is enhanced video evidence and follows the concluded autopsy of Bishop that occurred last week.
According to Spencer Schubert, the communications manager for Grand Island Police Department, prosecutors could not establish that the defendants intended to kill Bishop. The investigation remains ongoing.
“Nothing we say will bring our son, Matthew, back,” said Bishop’s mom, Colleen. “We do hope justice will be served.”
