OMAHA, NEB- A new report by the Food Research and Action Center indicates that one in eight Nebraskans are unable to afford enough food for themselves and their families.
The data shows Nebraska is one of many states that continues to deal with hunger.
Together Omaha works with other food pantries around the city to make sure people are not only fed but have access to some of the healthiest foods.
Nebraska is fighting an ongoing battle against hunger.
In fact a new study shows 16 percent of Nebraska families with children suffer from food hardship.
"For thousands of low income families this is particularly a difficult time of year, children are not eating meals at school and parents are having to account for additional food cost and child care cost," said Angie Grote.
Food Bank For Heartland says the summertime can be crucial for the hungry.
People tend to forget about supporting local food pantries.
"For every donated dollar that the food bank receives, we can provide enough food for three meals," said Grote.
"We really need the communities support to help us continue our mission," said Grote.
Helping to keep families fed year round and with healthy choices.
"All of us need fresh produce, we all need food that’s in it’s purest form, that’s healthy eating that’s healthy living," said Craig Howell.
The Food Bank works with Together Omaha giving low income families access to fresh vegetables.
"It’s open for clients, it’s open for people just coming through the community," said Howell.
Director Craig Howell says the mission is to not only fight hunger but get families out of poverty.
"We have programs for you, we have social workers, we have case management, we have a lot of fresh produce and good food and we also have nutritionist," said Howell.
Supporting thousands in our community who would otherwise go without.
"So if you just figure we are not the only folks in town and over one thousand people come through here every week, that tells you it’s a real problem and that represents every zip code," said Howell.
