Newly born giraffe calf is likely battling an infection at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium says its new giraffe calf is likely fighting a gastrointestinal infection.

Zola gave birth early Sunday morning but did not show the expected level of maternal care.

The calf has been receiving around-the-clock treatment ever since.

That includes daily bloodwork, X-rays and ultrasounds.

She is also receiving plasma transfusions from her father, Jawara.

Officials say they’re consulting with other facilities for advice and guidance.
