Norfolk man arrested for shooting after being found sleeping in a garage

NORFOLK, Neb. (KLKN) — The Norfolk Police Division (NPD) arrested a man after reports of him sleeping in a garage led to multiple charges from a warrant and drive-by.

Around 8 a.m. on Sept. 27, NPD responded to a report of two individuals sleeping in a garage. The two men left the area before the officers arrived. They were located nearby a short time later.

Officers determined that one of the individuals, Eric McCovery, had an active felony warrant in Texas with full extradition. McCovery fled from the officers when they tried to arrest him. He was apprehended a short time later and arrested.

After investigation, officers found that McCovery had gotten into an argument with the residents of the home they were sleeping in. He had been looking for a firearm that he believed they took from him while he was sleeping.

A few hours after McCovery was arrested, the residents contacted NPD after finding the firearm in the garage.

Investigators found that the firearm was connected to a drive-by shooting earlier that morning at a Casey’s. A vehicle’s windshield was damaged by a gunshot. The firearm was determined to have been reported stolen out of Omaha.

McCovery was arrested for the Texas warrant, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, possession of a stolen firearm and discharging a firearm at a vehicle. He was also cited for resisting arrest, obstructing a peace officer, two counts of criminal mischief, second-degree trespassing and a minor in possession of alcohol.
