One-horned rhino at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo dies after gastrointestinal illness

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A one-horned rhino living at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium died last week.
Zoo officials say 15-year-old Jontu was euthanized on Tuesday after suffering from a gastrointestinal illness.
Veterinary teams had been keeping an eye on the rhino for weeks before he was diagnosed with an inoperable partial intestinal obstruction.
“Jontu is a testament to the excellent quality care provided by both his animal care staff and the veterinary team at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium,” said Director of Animal Health Dr. Taylor Yaw in a Facebook post. “I couldn’t be prouder of our staff for all the procedures, diagnostics, consults, research and care they have provided for Jontu during this tough time.”
Jotnu arrived at the zoo in May 2011 and lived in the Asian Highlands habitat.
He is survived by his son, Marshall, and daughter, Joona.
