LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Suicides among active duty service members dropped last year compared with 2020.

A new report from the pentagon shows 519 service members took their own lives in 2021.

That was down from 582 military members in 2020.

While that was encouraging news, the overall suicide rate among active service members is up over the past ten years.

And the rate has remained flat among reserve service members and national guard troops.

A spokesman for defense secretary Lloyd Austin says the pentagon is committed to tackling suicides within the force and improving the quality of life for its service members.
