VIDEO: Pets putting on the pounds during pandemic
It's important to keep your pets at a healthy weight, even when you're stuck inside.
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The pandemic has lots of people spending more time inside than usual, and while some may have noticed some weight gain, they may not have noticed their pets have gained some weight as well.
David Magruder is a pet nutrition expert and he says it’s still important to get out of the house and keep your pets active. “Instead of overindulging with food, make sure they get plenty of activity, exercise, and stimulation.”
Just like with people, the choice of food can be a big factor in weight loss. “Look for treats with real ingredients that are not over dried or over preserved”, said Magruder.
There are some treats to give your pet that you may not expect. Bananas and sweet potatoes can pack a nutritional punch. Magruder added another fruit to the list: “Cranberries are great, and chock-full of antioxidants.”
