Pillen announces tax relief for individuals and businesses impacted by wildfires and storms
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Gov. Jim Pillen has announced an approved postponement of tax filing and payments for people and businesses in parts of Nebraska that were impacted by wildfires and storms.
The postponement regards areas impacted by wildfires and storms beginning on March 12, 2026.
Individuals and businesses now have until Feb. 1, 2027 to file returns and pay any taxes that were originally due at that time.
The five separate state disaster declarations is what allowed Pillen to request tax relief.
“When a disaster strikes, surviving the immediate aftermath takes priority. Undoubtedly, this year has weighed heavily on those who experienced losses and or damage resulting from the fires and storms that happened just months ago,” said Pillen. “This determination from the IRS will hopefully provide a little respite to Nebraskans in those counties who were affected, by allowing them the time to meet their tax obligations without incurring additional penalties.”
The current list of counties for the March wildfire declaration includes Morrill, Garden, Arthur, Keith, Grant, Lincoln, Dawson, Frontier, Saunders and Red Willow.
The current county included from the Pressy wildfire is Custer.
The current list of counties for the May severe storms includes Buffalo, Fillmore, Gage, Howard, Jefferson, Nemaha, Richardson, Thayer and Thurston.
The current county included for the May wildfires is Dawes.
The current county included for the June wildfires is Sioux.
