A Swanton man reeled in the surprise of a lifetime while fishing on the Missouri River.

Richard Hagen caught an 89-pound catfish while fishing with his brother.

“Fought him for a good half hour forty five minutes,” Hagen told Channel 8 Eyewitness News. “When he comes to the top of the water, we both kind of go, ‘Holy moly!’  ya know?”

Hagen says he caught the record-breaking fish using bluegill bait, a tractor and a whole lot of adrenaline.

“My personal best on flat heads, I had a 64-pounder was my personal best but when I seen that one I just kind of (said), ‘Please line don’t break,'” he said.

Hagen declined to reveal the location of his “secret fishing spot” where he made the monster catch. The fish was released back into the river after being weighed.
