Authorities have arrested a Kearney man on animal cruelty charges after he allegedly killed a dog with a baseball bat and a knife.

Kearney police arrested 21-year-old Khaleem Baringer early Thursday morning for felony cruelty to an animal and use of a weapon to commit a felony.

According to court documents, someone was trying to put the dog in its kennel after it had defecated inside a home when it “nipped” at them. That’s when Baringer became upset, grabbed a baseball bat and struck the animal several times in the head, before grabbing a knife and stabbing it at least once, according to an affidavit for his arrest.

Investigators said they found evidence of the alleged crime throughout the home.

Baringer is scheduled to appear in court next month.
