‘Really encouraging’: Lincoln Walk to End Alzheimer’s meets outstanding fundraising goal

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Hundreds of Nebraskans gathered on Sunday to take steps in the fight to find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.

The annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s was held at Victory Park in Lincoln.

A huge crowd walked to raise awareness and money for the disease.

Almost everyone there shared a personal connection.

“Unfortunately, I lost my dad in 2014 to Alzheimer’s disease,” said Dawn Amend, one of the co-chairs of the event. “And when you’re a caregiver and you’re that close to the cause, you really want to rally around it so others don’t have to go through the same thing.”

Channel 8’s Rod Fowler and McKenzie Johnson emceed at the event.

The group’s fundraising goal was $200,000. But before the walk even started, they had already raised more than $240,000.

The money goes toward care, support and research.

Amend said the group is now raising their goal to $250,000 by the end of the year.

“All of the fundraising stays within the state of Nebraska,” she said. “It’s really encouraging. And we’ve got to just keep fighting to find that cure.”
