LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN)- Santa Claus made a special appearance to visit patients and families in the NICU at Bryan Health.

Babies can be in the NICU for weeks or months at a time, keeping families apart for a long time, even during the holidays. This is especially true during the COVID-19 pandemic as visitor restriction policies make it difficult to be with loved ones.

The NICU at Bryan Health opened in 2008. It’s a level III facility and led by a board-certified neonatologist and a highly trained, multidisciplinary team. Specialists from multiple departments, including nursing, radiology, respiratory therapy, and anesthesia come together to care for the patients.

Having a baby in the NICU takes a big enough toll, but having a baby in the NICU during a pandemic makes it even harder.

Wednesday, Santa Claus made his annual visit to spread cheer to families and staff, visiting over 20 of their tiniest patients.

This year, because of COVID-19, the hospital couldn’t let an outside Santa come in, so Bryan Neonatologist, Dr. Albert Owusu Ansah, stepped up to play the man in red this year.
