Sean Astin coming to Lincoln to talk about mental health
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Sean Astin — known for his roles in “The Goonies,” “Rudy,” “Lord of the Rings” and “Stranger Things” — is coming to Lincoln during Bryan Health’s Mental Illness Awareness Week.
On Thursday, Astin will give a presentation called “How to Navigate Mental Illness Within the Family Dynamic,” in which he shares his story of growing up in a household where mental health illnesses were a part of everyday life.
His mother, Patty Duke, was an Academy Award and multi-Emmy Award winner who had undiagnosed bipolar disorder through most of Astin’s childhood.
After being diagnosed, she became a mental health advocate, writing books, producing a film, and giving lectures across the country.
Now Astin continues his mother’s legacy of raising awareness and destigmatizing mental illness.
His presentation is about representation, advocacy and empowerment.
Astin’s presentation will be held at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church from 6:30 to 8 pm.
