Seward County man killed by train near Friend

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A Seward County man was killed Tuesday after his truck was hit by a train near Friend, according to the Saline County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash happened around 5:25 p.m., the sheriff’s office says.

First responders arrived and found 38-year-old Aaron Rathje dead at the scene.

An investigation showed that Rathje had been driving a Ford F-150 when he attempted to cross the tracks and was hit by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe Train.

The investigation is ongoing, the sheriff’s office says.

A BNSF spokesperson says the crossing has a crossbuck sign but it does not have automatic arms.
