The Southwest Power Pool on Tuesday declared an Energy Emergency Alert Level 3.
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Southwest Power Pool on Tuesday declared an Energy Emergency Alert Level 3.
SPP is the balancing authority that oversees Nebraska and 13 other states.
An EEA Level 3 means utilities will be asked to perform controlled interruptions of electric service – rolling blackouts – throughout the region.
SPP says this is done as “a last resort” to preserve the electric system as a whole.
“Systemwide generating capacity has dropped below our current load of ~42 GW due to extremely low temperatures and inadequate supplies of natural gas,” SPP said.
SPP warns people in the region should take steps to conserve energy use and follow their local utilities’ instructions regarding conservation, local conditions and the potential for outages to their homes and businesses.
