Suspect in attack at south Lincoln Arby’s linked to homicide in Iowa

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The suspect accused of attacking an officer at a south Lincoln Abry’s on Tuesday night is linked to a homicide investigation in Iowa.

Joseph Bertolino, 36, of Jacksonville, Florida, was arrested around 10 p.m. on Tuesday after officers with the Lincoln Police Department were sent to a disturbance at the Arby’s near the intersection of 27th Street and Nebraska Parkway.

He was taken to the Lancaster County Jail on suspicion of attempted first-degree assault on an officer.

While in custody, the Iowa Department of Public Safety said Bertolino made concerning statements to law enforcement in reference to an event that occurred earlier that evening at the Country Inn and Suites Hotel in Carter Lake, Iowa.

LPD told Carter Lake Police of the allegations made by Bertolino. Around the same time, a witness called the Carter Lake Police to request a wellness check on a male subject at the same hotel.

When officers arrived at the hotel, they found the man dead in a hotel room, according to authorities.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending next of kin notification, and an autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday.
