The dangerous heat continues
After a scorcher of a Monday, we did not cool off much in the overnight hours. Lincoln’s temperature remained in the 80s for most of the night before dropping into the upper-70s closer to sunrise on Tuesday.
Unfortunately, this will serve as a launching pad for another dangerously hot day. Most will see triple-digit heat in southeast Nebraska. We’re forecasting a high near 105° in Lincoln on Tuesday. This would break the record of 103° set in 1948.
The humidity sticks around, resulting in excessive feels-like temperatures on Tuesday. Heat index values upwards of 115° are possible in Lincoln and upwards of 120° closer to the Missouri River. While we expect slightly lower peak heat index values in central Nebraska, they will still be high enough to be dangerous.
As we’ve said in recent days, this kind of heat is life-threatening if you do not take proper precautions. Drink plenty of water and try to stay inside during the hottest hours of the day. If you have to be outside, take many water breaks and be on the lookout for signs of heat illness.
We’ll flirt with record highs yet again on Wednesday. Although triple-digit heat is looking possible on Thursday, Lincoln’s record will be a little bit harder to achieve.
Excessive Heat Warnings remain in effect at least through Wednesday in all of eastern Nebraska, with Heat Advisories farther west.
While the Excessive Heat Warning will stay in place through Thursday in the southeast corner of the state, many western counties will be removed from these heat alerts on Thursday. This is due to a cold front passage.
You’ll notice the effects of the cold front on Friday and especially over the weekend. We are forecasting highs in the 80s both on Saturday and Sunday. And as we cool things off, we also have to introduce a few small chances for rain.
