LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – It would be wise to not spend your Labor Day weekend at Bluestem Lake south of Lincoln.

On Friday, Nebraska’s Department of Health and Human Services issued a health alert for toxic algal blooms at the lake.

Samples taken earlier in the week passed the threshold of microcystin, a toxin that is released by some blue-green algae.

Signs at the lake will be posted to advise the public to use caution, officials say.

Boating and finishing are still permitted, but officials urge lakegoers to avoid exposure to the water.
