Tunnel in western Lincoln renovated with help from community

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A tunnel near the South Salt Creek neighborhood in Lincoln has been refurbished and is now ready for the community to enjoy.

The tunnel near Third and F Streets had fallen into disrepair and has now been renovated thanks to the help from Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln.

Community members wanted to make updates to create a safe passageway for pedestrians, including students from Park Middle School.

The updated tunnel has new lighting, murals, plants and a roof that no longer leaks.

“Healthy cities are made up of healthy neighborhoods – ones that offer residents safe streets, walkability, and opportunities to be physically healthy,” Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird said in a press release.  “The tunnel improvements leave a lasting impact beyond the one-day festival that catalyzed the project, and they add to the vitality of the neighborhood.”

The South Salt Creek neighborhood will work with the Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department to take care of the landscape.
