Two men facing sentence increasement after Grand Island man passes away from assault

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KLKN) — On Sunday, July 5, a man was attacked in downtown Grand Island. He was on life support the remainder of the week in order to find matches for organ donation, according to his family. This morning around 4 a.m. his life support was suspended.

Matthew Bishop, a 41-year-old man, passed away from severe injuries caused by the assault. Two men had been arrested on charges of first degree assault on Wednesday, July 8.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday, July 10. This morning, there will be a meeting between the Grand Island Police Department (GIPD) and the Hall County Attorney regarding the case. They will speak about whether the charges for the two suspects will be amended now that the victim has passed.

GIPD encourages community members with information regarding the case to call the department.
