Two teens steal new Jeep from 66-year-old man, Lincoln Police say

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Two teens were caught with a 66-year-old man’s new Jeep on Tuesday, Lincoln Police say.

Around 9:42 a.m., the man told police that his 2022 Jeep Wrangler had been stolen from his driveway near 70th Street and Pioneers Boulevard.

Officers were able to find the vehicle using its GPS, which led them to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Rec Center.

When officers arrived, a 14- and 16-year-old exited the vehicle and ran away.

Officers were able to catch up and took both into custody.  They lodged both teens in the Youth Assessment Center on suspicion of theft by receiving stolen property.

Lincoln Police have seen a 59.8% increase in auto thefts this year compared to the five-year average.

In June alone, thefts have increased by 65.4% in comparison to last year.

Only 50% of the stolen vehicles have been recovered, according to police.

About 29.5% of vehicles stolen were unlocked and had keys inside, police say.
