(LINCOLN, Neb.)- Imagine having 10 hours of homework and no lunch. UNMC nursing students are pairing up with Lighthouse Afterschool Program to keep young minds fed.
“They asked me what our number one need was and that was what came out, was that we just need help. We need help with the lunches,” said Bill Michener.
UNMC and Lighthouse have had a partnership for four years. This year, the group is asking you to help them raise money through a gofundme link to keep teens fed.
“Our instructor put us in contact with Lighthouse, and so that’s part of the outreach to the community,” said Chris Williams, a UNMC student. “To serve underserved and at-risk populations. We got to see what was going on here which is they’re helping the kids.”
The nursing students have volunteered at the after school learning center, educating students about health and hygiene. Michener says middle and high school teens have enough pressure doing online classes during COVID.
“It’s tough right now,” said Michener. “I mean the anxiety levels are at the highest and there are mental health issues that we have to be concerned about. So, that’s why we decided to open up our doors and directly help them, so they have a safe place to come with that direct support of our staff. Just to feel like they’re part of something.”
The afterschool programs always provided dinner but now that Lighthouse is open 7:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. Lunches are needed as well.
“Just put your own feet in their perspective and see what they’re going through,” said Williams. “For kids to show up for a whole day, maybe 10 or 11 hours of school work and not have a meal. I mean, just think about that and how that might make you want to help out.”
Lighthouse is accepting monetary donations from anyone or food donations from grocery stores only due to the pandemic.
