UPDATE: Suspect shot by State trooper after struggle over gun

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) -Update as of 1opm Wednesday.  Investigations continue at the apartment complex on 19th and G where an officer-involved shooting happened earlier this afternoon.  Investigators plan to be working the scene until the early hours of Thanksgiving morning.

Around 2:45pm Wednesday afternoon, officers with the Lancaster County Drug Task Force were following a lead through a crime stopper’s tip.

“Those investigators attempted to make contact with an individual in a vehicle behind this apartment building. During that contact, one of the investigators observed that the individual was in possession of a firearm, a handgun. During this contact, a struggle ensued and an investigator with the State Patrol discharged his duty weapon striking the subject,” said Colonel John Bolduc with the Nebraska State Patrol.

Investigators say they believe the trooper fired only one shot, and law enforcement performed CPR on the man immediately after he was shot.  It is unknown at this time if the suspect lived in the apartment complex.  The Lancaster County Sheriffs Office is leading the investigation.

“Our role here is to determine what happened, present that evidence to the county attorney’s office and have them make a determination whether that is justified or not,” said Sheriff Terry Wagner Lancaster County.

Colonel Bolduc said the only evidence inside the car that officers can confirm at this time is,

“A weapon, a handgun was recovered at the scene.”

The Nebraska State Patrol officer is on administrative leave per protocol, which will last for the duration of the investigation.

“There is an investigation in the shooting by an outside agency, and then there is an internal investigation by the agency that employs the officer,” said Sheriff Wagner.

The man who was shot was taken to an area hospital, but his condition, age, and name are still unknown at this time.
