Victim loses $17,500 to phone scammer

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Lincoln Police say a 91-year-old Lincoln resident lost $17,500 to a phone scammer in the span of four days.

The victim began receiving calls from someone claiming to be from Wells Fargo Bank on November 16.

The scammer persuaded the victim to purchase gift cards and give the caller the gift card codes. Over the course of four days, the victim lost a total of $17,500.

LPD says the investigation is currently ongoing. Lincoln Police reminds the community to be aware of similar scams in the area.

LPD says if you are asked to purchase a gift card over the phone, end the call and contact the business or organization to confirm the request.
