VIDEO: US Capitol officer and suspect dead

Crash

WASHINGTON (KLKN) — Acting U.S. Capitol Police Chief says the suspect rammed into two police officers when ramming into the north barrier. One officer has died since being taken to the hospital.

The suspect then steps out of his vehicle brandishing a knife. The Police Chief said the suspect then lunged and approached officers aggressively, so officers opened fire at the suspect, who later died at the hospital.

U.S. Capitol Police have opened fire after a vehicle rammed into the north barricade of the Capitol complex. A heavy police presence can be seen outside the Capitol at this time.

Two officers have been injured, one critically says the sources. A suspect was taken into custody but has since passed away.

Law enforcement has confirmed a vehicle occupied “by a single individual, the driver, sought to ram the north barrier at the Capitol.” The driver then stepped out of his car with a weapon and was shot by police.

It is unclear whether the ramming was intentional.

The President had already left the Capitol for Camp David, a pre-planned trip.

Officials say there is no heightened threat posture. However, Consitution Ave. between NE Second and NW First Streets, and First St. between NE Constitution and SE Independence Avenues will be closed down for the time being.

This is a developing story and we’ll keep you updated as new detail are released.
