Water leak closes housing unit at Nebraska State Penitentiary
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A housing unit at the Nebraska State Penitentiary is now closed while crews work to fix a water leak.
About 140 inmates were temporarily moved into the gymnasium Wednesday night. Officials are working to move them to more permanent housing.
Inmates were provided portable toilets and bottled water, the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services said.
Crews are looking into what caused the leak to identify needed repairs.
Officials say the leak was found late Wednesday afternoon after a mechanical room was flooded
Water also covered the floor in the affected housing unit, according to officials.
The penitentiary campus has since been placed on modified operations due to the impact on electrical, water and other systems.
Modified operations will continue while officials transport inmates.
