Waverly teen recovering after being stabbed in the heart, sheriff’s office says

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A 15-year-old had heart surgery on Thursday after being stabbed several times by a 14-year-old, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office says.

Deputies first responded to the stabbing in Wayne Park around 11:45 a.m. after receiving reports that a teenager was repeatedly stabbed.

The victim was taken to the hospital after sustaining possible life-threatening injuries, the worst being a stab to the heart.

The sheriff’s office says the teen has been upgraded to serious condition and is currently recovering.

The suspect was lodged in the youth assessment center on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder and use of a weapon to commit a felony.

During their investigation, deputies recovered a knife at the crime scene.

Both students were Waverly High School students, though Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner says they did not know each other.

One of the victim’s friends, Kiara Gramlich, said the stabbing was a surprise to her. She said the suspect was new to their school but seemed like a good kid.

“We don’t know the reason why he stabbed him yet,” she said. “He’s like a really big teddy bear and he doesn’t like do fights or anything.”

Wagner thinks the teen committed the crime for notoriety.

“And that’s why I’m not gonna say his name,” he said. “And I think that’s what he told us was that he was going to be famous, that’s pretty scary.”

Waverly locals say the park is usually a safe place and this stabbing was unexpected.

George Lippold, a resident of Waverly, said he walks the park every day with his dog Binx but they weren’t around yesterday to see what happened.

“It’s a good place for kids to gather, especially on a day off when they’re not in school, they get a chance to get together and mingle,” Lippold said. “I hope the kid survives and I hope the other kid learns his lesson one way or another.”

The suspect recently moved to Waverly from Colorado. Deputies say they are working with authorities there to determine any prior criminal background.

The county attorney’s office is still deciding if the teen can be charged as an adult.

The investigation is open and ongoing.  Return to Channel 8 as more updates become available.
