“We all wish him the very, very best.”

Husker fans reflect on the career of quarterback Adrian Martinez after he announced that he will be entering the transfer portal.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – On Thursday, Husker quarterback Adrian Martinez announced he is entering the transfer portal, putting an end to his four years with the football program.

Statistically, Martinez leaves Nebraska as the most productive quarterback in program history. Fans who crossed paths with him say he was an even better person.

“I’ve met Adrian personally,” Best of Big Red general manager Joey Rupp said. “I’ve gotten really close with his family. His parents come in every home game day, they stop in to say hi to me, I get hugs from them, so it’s gonna be sad to lose that. We’ve become friends.”

UNL student and Husker fan Chaz Biondino says he got to know Martinez through having classes with him.

“He’s actually a really good person once you get to know him and he’s just a really honest, straightforward dude,” Biondino said. “He’s a really caring person.”

While Martinez is the all-time leader in offensive yardage at Nebraska, in his four years as a starter, the team never won more than five games in season. Some fans expressed disappointment that the Huskers never took the next step with Martinez at the helm.

“He’s a great athlete,” Husker fan Gene Liebig said. “I think he put his heart and soul into Nebraska, but [his] legacy is kind of the legacy of Scott Frost. Really in the last four years, we lost a lot of games and won very few.”

“The guy could do meteoric things, followed by very basic mistakes that just really hurt his career throughout,” Husker fan Gary Broilliette said.

Regardless of how the team performed with Martinez at quarterback, he represented the university and the state of Nebraska with class.

Fans say they hope he finds success in his next stop.

“I love you, brother,” Biondino said. “Good luck to your next stages in life.”

“We all wish him the very, very best,” Rupp said.
