‘We survived’: Lincoln business celebrates one-year anniversary after opening during pandemic

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — We all know businesses have struggled during the pandemic; but what about a business that opened its doors right in the middle of it?

Dermatology Associates of Lincoln says launching their business in May of 2020 wasn’t easy. Despite the challenges, they persevered and are now celebrating their one-year anniversary with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“Today’s kind of a culmination of a year of hard work to get to where we are so it’s a grand opening and a celebration that we survived our first year of business during the pandemic,” commented Dr. Casey Bowen, co-owner of Dermatology Associates of Lincoln.

The Lincoln Chamber of Commerce hosted the ceremony on Thursday, June 3 in front of the medical dermatology office at 6969 South St. The Chamber of Commerce had actually offered to hold the ribbon cutting on May 11 of 2020 over Zoom. However, Dr. Bowen said it was “too significant of an event to not be done in person.”

After opening on May 11, the physicians’ office never shut its doors. While they say it was a rocky start, partially due to supply and staffing shortages, they were able to stay afloat thanks to telemedicine.

“It’s really opened up access to rural Nebraska,” said Dr. Bowen. “We have right now two remote sites and several that are coming on board so that patients have equal access to specialty care.”

Although co-owner Dr. Gina Weir said opening a business during a pandemic was “no cake-walk,” the doctors were grateful for their patients.

“Excellent, awesome, yeah,” exclaimed Dr. Gina Weir, co-owner of Dermatology Associates of Lincoln. “I mean really COVID hasn’t phased our patients I think at least one bit because honestly when you have that relationship they still wanna come see you.”
