Wildfire north of Columbus closes portion of Highway 81

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Firefighters are battling a wildfire near Humphrey as drought conditions continue to swell.

Platte County Emergency Manager Tim Hofbauer says the fire started north of Highway 81 and moved several miles southeast.

The fire came close to several homes but ultimately destroyed only one or two structures, according to Hofbauer.

Highway 81 was closed for several hours between the Highway 91 junction and 490 Street, roughly eight miles south of Madison.

The highway was reopened some time after 8 p.m.

Hofbauer advised people to avoid traveling north on Highway 81 from Columbus as firefighters were using the road to put water on the fire.

The size and cause of the fire is unknown.
