LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Will adult children who were listed as a dependent on the 2019 tax return get a stimulus check? Officials say yes, as long as they file their next tax return independently.

About 13 million young adults between the ages of 17-24 did not receive their stimulus checks because their parents claimed them, but here is how those young adults can make that money back:

If you file your 2020 tax return by April 15th of this year, and no one claims you as a dependent, it’s likely that you will receive a $1,200 stimulus check from the first CARES Act, and possibly the $600 dollar check from the second round of relief, according to Tim Kulhanek, an Investment Advisor.

“Don’t overlook an opportunity to get these two checks, the stimulus checks, if you missed out on them last year,” Kulhanek said.

According to the IRS, they can claim the check in the form of a Recovery Rebate Credit from the first stimulus bill on their 2020 tax returns with the 1040 form.

Kulhanek added, things are changing daily when dealing with stimulus checks and when the new administration comes in January 20th, there will most likely be even more change.
