Woman hid from officers in sofa after theft at Lincoln storage unit, police say

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Officers have arrested four after a theft at a Lincoln storage unit, including one woman who hid in a sofa, police say.

Just before 4 p.m. on Monday, officers were sent to Sasquatch Self Storage near Southwest 20th and West O Streets after a report of a burglary.

The two victims told police that someone had entered their storage unit and stole about $1,500 worth of items sometime overnight.

Police think those responsible came from the neighboring unit by removing a panel from the shared wall.

Officers spoke with management, which said 58-year-old Jeffrey Adams is the renter of the neighboring unit.

Police were also made aware that 39-year-old Julie Rodgers frequently visited the unit.

Security footage showed Rodgers, along with 36-year-old Brandyn Tomes, arriving at the neighboring storage unit in a Ford Escape around 10 p.m. Sunday, according to police.

Officers went to Tomes’ home in Lincoln and found the Ford, which had been reported stolen out of Omaha in December.

Inside, officers found the victims’ stolen items, meth and a homemade firework, according to police.

Tomes was arrested on suspicion of burglary, theft by receiving, possession of burglar’s tools, possession of an explosive device and possession of a controlled substance.

Police then went to Rodgers’ home, but no one answered the door, so officers got a search warrant.

Officers searched and found Rodgers hidden inside a sofa, according to police.

Police also discovered meth, drug paraphernalia, suspected stolen items and a 9 mm handgun at the home.

Rodgers was arrested on suspicion of burglary, theft by receiving, possession of a controlled substance and possession of burglar tools.

James Roper, 56, was also inside the home at the time and was arrested on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance.

Officers later developed probable cause that Adams had been the one who stole the vehicle and arrested him on suspicion of theft by receiving.
