LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A car owner caught someone trying to steal their vehicle Wednesday morning and scared them off.

The Lincoln Police Department says this happened near 40th and Sumner Streets just before 6 a.m.

Police said the owner started their car and then went back inside for something.

That’s when the would-be thief approached the vehicle, only to get caught in the act.

Thet took off running after being confronted.  LPD has not released any description of them at this point.

As always, authorities remind everyone to never leave an unattended car running.

According to the latest report by the National Insurance Crime Bureau, vehicle thefts involving keys rose more than 20% between 2019 and 2021.

That includes thefts when key fobs were left inside vehicles.
