Yoga is now a requirement for Lincoln police recruits

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Lincoln Police Department added a new requirement for its recruits in the police academy.

Every Wednesday morning, recruits partake in a one-hour yoga session specifically designed for first responders.  Not only does it help get their blood flowing in the morning, but it’s a calming class in the middle of the week.  These recruits are entering a stressful field, and things they learn in this class are just another tool to help them in the future.

“I think it’s really important. There is a lot of breath work and a kind of mindfulness to it that I think is really beneficial to this job. You know, obviously, we have to go into stressful situations, and it’s really important for us to be in control of ourselves, and I think this yoga really helps,” recruit Brandyn Rupp said.

Rupp said if it wasn’t for this class, he might not have ever tried yoga, but now he feels that it’s something he will continue even after the academy.
