York’s Hampton Inn roof collapse kills boy, displaces 40

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The roof of York’s Hampton Inn collapsed Sunday evening killing one boy and displacing 40 hotel guests, York Police Department said.

On Sunday around 9:05 p.m., the York County Communications Center received multiple calls that the hotel’s roof had collapsed.

York Fire Department worked with law enforcement personnel from the York Police Department and County Sheriff’s office to respond to the scene.

Responders located a boy who was trapped in the pool room under debris.  Police say the boy was dead when they arrived at the scene.

Officers safely evacuated 40 other hotel guests from the scene, police say.

The Nebraska State Fire Marshal is currently investigating the cause of the collapse, police say.

The Runza Restaurant located next to the hotel helped care for guests after the incident.

The York County Communications Center, York Sheriff’s Office, York Fire Department, Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s office, Nebraska Public Power District, Black Hills Energy, Hitz Towing, Mogul’s Transmission and Towing, Hampton Inn staff and other volunteers in the area helped on the scene.

The collapse is still under investigation.
