Omaha woman charged with child abuse after leaving newborn on sidewalk

OMAHA, Neb (AP) — A woman was charged with felony child abuse after she gave birth on a sidewalk and abandoned the baby in southeast Omaha, according to the Omaha Police Department.
Trinity Shakespeare, 27, of Omaha, was released from the hospital and taken into the Douglas County jail on Tuesday, police said in a news release.
Temperatures were around 16 degrees when officers were called on Sunday morning by witnesses who stated a woman gave birth and left the child on the sidewalk.
The baby was taken to a hospital by emergency responders and is expected to survive the exposure to the cold.
Shakespeare was found close to where the baby was born and was taken to a hospital. Police say she was charged with abuse after they discussed the case with the Douglas County Attorney’s Office.
