UNL hits pause on plans to sell family housing units

University officials now apologizing for the way the situation was handled

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – In an abrupt turnaround, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln says it will now delay any plans to sell or redevelop three properties that are home to hundreds of married students with families.

This comes just days after the university notified affected students and their families that their leases would end on June 30th at which point these families would need to find new housing arrangements.

The three properties include Colonial Terrace near 33rd and Starr streets; a complex at 2224 U St.; and two apartment buildings near 23rd and Vine streets.

The news was delivered to students in an email in which UNL’s executive vice chancellor, Katherine Ankerson, apologized for the way the situation was handled.

Ankerson wrote that any further action will be put on hold until they can put together a plan that will minimize the impact on current residents.

She added that moving forward, residents will be included in discussions about any future plans.
