Golf tournament raises money for Tabitha to feed hundreds in Lincoln area

Gateway Sertoma Club partners with Tabitha Meals on Wheels for 20th year

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Forty teams of four hit the green on Friday to raise money for Tabitha Meals on Wheels.

This is the 20th year that Lincoln’s Gateway Sertoma Club has partnered with Tabitha for this golf tournament.

Last year’s tournament brought in about $75,000, and organizers are hoping that this will be another good year.

Tabitha Meals on Wheels delivers around 450 meals to seniors in Lincoln each day.

It has about 1,000 volunteers who make it all possible. Tabitha is also celebrating its 55th year of serving our area.

“Eighty percent of those that we serve can’t afford the meal that we provide them every day,” said Christie Hinrichs, president and CEO of Tabitha Meals on Wheels. “Ninety percent say that this meal is the single thing that keeps them in their own home, and more than 80% say that that volunteer may be the only person they see in that day or that week.”

Tabitha is dependent on donor support to provide meals to those who can’t afford them.

“We have about an $815,000 shortfall every year in terms of supporting those who, again, don’t have the ability to pay,” Hinrichs said.
