October snowfall causes issues on roads

For Sunday commuters like Michelle Schroeder, the October snowstorm that rolled through the state on Sunday came a bit early.

“I had to kind of pinch myself and remember that it was October and not November because it seemed like we were a month ahead of time on weather,” said Schroeder.

Schroeder is traveling north from Wichita, Kansas to Omaha.

On her way into Nebraska, conditions noticeably worsened.

“It was really snowy, the roads were slick on 81, right around when we got into Nebraska. It was coming down pretty good. The snow was and it was windy, so the winds were blowing in on us and it was hard to pass,” said Schroeder.

An accident near the Waverly exit of Interstate 80 held up traffic throughout the morning hours.

Snow flurries and slushy conditions forced drivers to slow down and think twice about passing.

“We saw a lot of cars in the ditch so we did slow down, didn’t go very fast, one of the lanes was all slush so we didn’t pass at all,” said Schroeder.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation is doing its part as well, monitoring conditions statewide.

Communications Manager Vicki Kramer says that it is also on all of us to double check road conditions before hitting the road.

“Check before you go, so check 511 for updates for road conditions and then also as we move into the morning commute, give yourself a little more time and double check one more time before you head out in the morning,” said Kramer.
