Safe Quarters Drive raises over $100,000 for domestic violence services

The Friendship Home exists to support and give shelter to victims of domestic violence.
Sunday was their annual safe quarters drive to fund the services they provide.
It was the 16th annual safe quarters drive, which helps to fund the vital services available to the victims of domestic violence.
The Gibson family volunteered for the first time today, they say it was a great opportunity to give back to a cause they are passionate about.
“We believe very strongly in supporting people who are survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. We have had people come to our door every year and we felt like it was our turn to walk the neighborhoods and give back,” said Whitney Gibson.
With thousands of volunteers out and about, the yearly event brings a lot of awareness to this important issue.
One Lincoln woman, a survivor of domestic violence, took her three daughters to shelter at the friendship home a few decades ago.
She spoke about the importance of having these services available to those in need.
“The overall safety of my situation, it got very dangerous and so it, to me, it was just easier to leave and take my chances that way. We were able to come into shelter and it gave us a place to stop for a minute and to try and figure out what my next step was.”
The Safe Quarters Drive is the largest fundraiser for the Friendship Home each year.
The money raised today will be directly going to keep providing resources and to help make survivors of domestic violence gain access to a safe space.
123 teams of volunteers made up of 1,400 people helped to raise over $100,000 to continue the Friendship Home’s services for victims of domestic violence.
It takes just 10 dollars to provide shelter and food to a survivor for one night.
