On Veterans Day Weekend, the Huskers pay tribute with alternate uniforms

It was a frigid November game day in Lincoln, Nebraska, as the Huskers took on Illinois in a Big Ten Conference game.
Beforehand, there was an extended helicopter flyover and the Huskers were donning their newest Adidas uniforms, a tribute for Veterans Day.
“It was very meaningful and even on such a cold day to see the patriotism of the fans and how heartfelt their thanks to the people who have served. It was really touching,” said Husker fan Richard Birr.
The uniforms paid tribute to the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.
They also celebrate Memorial Stadium, which was named in honor of Nebraskans who died serving their country.
“This is a great way to honor all of the veterans, you have such a large group of people and they can show their appreciation for everybody who has been in a war, in service or who have honored our country by serving,” said fan Alan Shiers.
The jerseys looked similar to those worn in 1923, the year the stadium opened, and the helmet design gives a nod to the leather helmets of the time period.
“It was actually really cool, having a lot of friends who are in the military, it’s kind of special to see that and the connection that we have just here in Nebraska,” said fan Tanner Lockhorn.
The Huskers performed very well, winning 54 to 35.
The fans were pumped up to be a part of it, even Herbie Husker got involved.
“Seeing Herbie dressed in military gear, overall with Veterans Day coming in tomorrow it was just a great honor,” said
Lonnie Steggs.
The Huskers have their home finale next Saturday against Michigan State before traveling to Iowa City to face the Iowa Hawkeyes to close the season.
