2 officers killed, 1 injured in shooting in Connecticut
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Two officers are dead and one is recovering in the hospital after responding to a domestic disturbance call in Bristol, Connecticut.
Sgt. Christine Jeltema of the Connecticut State Police Department alleges that the gunman met officers outside his home Wednesday night and began firing at them.
“Our men and women of the Bristol Police Department are privileged and honored to serve on the front lines protecting and serving the community of Bristol, and that’s what these heroes did last night,” Chief Brian Gould said at a Thursday press conference. “They answered a call to duty, and they answered without hesitation.”
One officer was pronounced dead at the scene, and a second officer was pronounced dead at the hospital.
They have been named as 35-year-old Sgt. Dustin Demonte and 34-year-old Officer Alex Hamzy.
Officer Alec Iurato, 26, who was injured in the shooting, underwent surgery and has been released from the hospital.
“Today, our hearts are broken,” Bristol Mayor Jeff Caggiano said. “We’re united in immeasurable grief for those hero officers, for their families and friends and for all of our law enforcement personnel.”
State police said the shooter, 35-year-old Nicholas Brutcher, was also killed. His brother, 32-year-old Nathan Brutcher, was wounded and brought to a hospital.
BPD and the state police say there is no threat to the public.
The shooting is still under investigation.
