Nebraska could remain part of push for constitutional convention past 2027

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Nebraska is among the states calling for a Convention of States, which would propose and consider changes to the Constitution.

And some lawmakers want to make sure Nebraska remains a part of that group.

So far, 19 states have signed up to be part of this Convention of States. But they need 34 to make it happen.

Last year, lawmakers approved an amendment that says if there aren’t 34 states by 2027, Nebraska will drop out.

But on Thursday, some senators proposed eliminating that time frame.

A committee heard both supporters and opponents of the convention.

“Convention of the states is a constitutional tool provided by our founders to empower the American people to hold our government accountable,” said Steven Steikuehle, a volunteer with Convention of States Nebraska, in support of the bill.

Those in opposition say it would harm voters’ rights.

“We are concerned that LR 31 could potentially radically change the Constitution without the ability of involvement from everyday people that these changes would affect,” said Arlo Hettle with Nebraska Civic Engagement Table.
