Nebraska firefighters rescue dozens of cattle after trailer flips on Highway 81

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Eight cows died, but dozens were saved Thursday night after a semitrailer flipped over south of Hebron.

The Hebron Fire Department said it responded to a rollover crash on Highway 81 on Thursday night.

A semi from South Dakota and its trailer were found flipped on the highway, and 57 cows were trapped inside.

Firefighters, assisted by local ranchers and a towing company, managed to save 49 of the cows after 3½ hours of work.

People in the area also came out with portable pens and extra trucks to help corral the surviving cows.

Officials think the truck went around a curve too fast, resulting in the crash.

The fire department said the driver was OK and only suffered a few scrapes.
